Tesla Autopilot Updates on the way

The brand new Tesla Autopilot 2.0 update is ready to be launched as Tesla’s first fully autonomous self-driving system.

A wave of new software updates is on the way to the Tesla cars in the coming weeks. Elon Musk, the company’s boss, has written on twitter that: “Major improvements to Autopilot coming with V8.0 and 8.1 software (std OTA update) primarily through advanced processing of radar signals”.

This suggests that the first wave of updates will keep cars up to date and bring them to the V8.0 update using the over-the-air (OTA) technology. The V8.1 update which was teased implies that the fully autonomous autopilot software could be making its way into cars very soon.

This system will most likely be called Tesla Autopilot 2.0 and other than the software update there will also have to be some physical hardware changes made as previous reports suggest. This will include extra sensors in each corner of the car and a ‘triple’ front-facing camera system which has already been implemented into the latest Model S cars by Tesla.

Autopilot 2.0 should most certainly enable SAE Level 4 fully autonomous driving whereas the driver will not be needed to control the car. This is similar to the new Ford announcement which stated that their new car idea includes no steering wheel or pedals and by 2020 it will be capable of being created.

Earlier this year however Tesla was in trouble after a driver in the US suffered a fatal crash involving a Model S and its Autopilot system.

This has sparked new insurance strategies as a new scheme for Tesla cars in Australia was created. It joins insurance policies already available in Hong Kong and Mexico in partnership with bigger insurance firms.

Many countries still don’t offer the same insurance policies for electric cars which is why Tesla is making sure that the policies become much better and widely available. The policies left out important aspects such as a cover for the wall connector to charge the car.

Tesla UK has not commented on the chances of a similar insurance scheme being offered in this country.
